Columbia Carscape - competition catalogue

Year - 1985

This design evolves from the concept of the European plaza. Its premise is that a public parking lot, like a public building, should contribute to public beauty. the matrix of the city - streets and alleys - is reinforced in a plaza geometry of squares, diagonals, and symmetry. The alley, as a pedestrian connector of parking and neighborhood to Washington Street, is intended as a place for mixed-use activity.
There are metal sleeves in the paving and storage for poles that are to be used to erect canvas coveriing for weekend events of public activities (fairs, dances, games).
